Finally got round to watching this the other weekend. While it looked and sounded great, the film itself was rather weak. The story centers around, a girl who pretends to be a boy to save her aged and ill father from military service. She quickly moves to the rank of General and must defend the land from northern invaders (and corrupt and jealous military leaders on her own side). The story sounds good on paper, but the execution is where the film fails. The characters don't seem very believable (both the acting and the script) and as such you don't feel that deep a connection with them. As such, the moments which should have you on the edge of your seat or fighting back the tears have little emotional resonance. It doesn't help that the story skips time. That in itself is not bad, a war isn't fought and won in a day, it's just that the time skips feel very unrealistic. You just don't believe the amount of time that is supposed to have past, has.
If it's possible, I'd recommend a rental first. Bottom line, the Disney version was better. A real shame as I was really keen for this live action version.
