First up, the original Dub is included on this disc.

Audio wise, the DTS tracks sound a lot better than the Dolby Digital tracks. The DTS track sounds very good (better than the Dolby Digital track on the sequel Appleseed Ex Machina).

The picture quality of the opening sequence is a mess. It suffers very badly from banding (I haven't seen banding this bad since Sky Blue). I recall the same issues with the DVD release so perhaps it is a master issue... Thankfully the picture quality after this is fantastic. I really enjoyed watching the blu-ray version. Detail levels are amazing and a joy to watch. The original animation style of the characters takes a little getting used to. Later films using the same style (Ex Machina and Vexille) modified the style so the differences between the world and the characters were less extreme. The first use of this style on display here lends the characters to look very glossy. At times it seemed a little distracting but the great story quickly removes the distraction.

I'm very glad I upgraded from the DVD and would recommend this release to fans.

Pity about the lack of lossless audio. I'll post a BDinfo snapshot later to check the bitrates of the Dolby Digital and DTS tracks.

An interesting note is that they have created an all new english dub for this release using the same voice actors as Ex Machina. I'll be interested to hear the new track, but it would have been nice to include the original Dub.
