I just got the Australian Blu-ray release of RAN (Region A & B by the way). It is the same Studio Canal (Universal) release as the UK. The start up screen has options for Australia, the UK and among other, the US. Looks like Universal must have snagged the US rights from Criterion to sew up world wide distribution. Unfortunately this means a Criterion release is now extremely doubtful.
The image quality on this one is ok. Not the best out there and while better than the DVD release, it's not the night and day I was hoping for. It looks to be from the same source as the criterion DVD.
Bad bad new. Criterion have cancelled this release. It disappeared from their website a few days ago. I enquired and received the following reply from them:
