Evangelion 2.22 comes to Japan in May, Germany follows in July
I won't say much about the announcement of the Japanese home video release of Evangelion 2.0: You can (not) advance because German distributor Universum Anime pretty much stomped it to the ground (if you're able to understand German that is) with their own announcement. King Records will release Evangelion 2.0 in a longer 2.22 cut on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in Japan on May 24th, 2010. As espected this release won't include English subtitles and the cover artwork (see left) isn't much to write home about.
Just a few hours after King Records' announcement, Universum Anime posted in the label's own message board that they will release this version on DVD (in a limited edition steelbook) and Blu-ray Disc just two months later on July 16, 2010! They also mentioned to release Evangelion 1.11 on Blu-ray Disc (which was only available on DVD in Germany) on the same day.
FUNimation hasn't mentioned Evangelion 2.0 so far (even though they're releasing 1.11 on Blu-ray Disc on March 8th) and if they keep up their pace, I don't think 2.0 will come to US shores in 2010.

That would be really awesome!
One of the big dispointments with blu-ray to date (for me anyway) is the lack of innovative features to take advantage of the fact it basically runs like a pc under the hood. Sure we have had some gimmick features, but (and if I had even an ounce of know-how I would write it myself but alas know nothing) "they" should write an app that allows you to load a subtitles package into the mandatory 1gb of storage (on profile 2 machines) which would then be viewable on the disc. They could do the same for dub packages (the discs could be authored so the actual dialog is a seperate stream so only a dialoge download was needed and the music and effects would run off the original discs. This would mean releases need ever only have the Original Language track and users could download the language options they require. The extra space saved on the disc from not having 15 languages could be used for maxing out image quality. The java software on the players was designed to make this possible but no-one has done anything with it.
The possabilities with such an app are awesome. Studios could release "official" language packs creating revenue (for them and the app creator/owner). Fans could create fan subs and alternate audio or sub tracks. Like I said, if I had the know-how or the money to hire someone with the know-how, I think there is a good buck to be made and the best thing is we fans of foreign cinema and anime can buy these great releases knowing a language add-on will be possible.
@Alex
I'm gonna wait for some reviews first as well.

Jup, HK pretty much disappoints when it comes to anime releases on BD
I am always very skeptic when stuff gets released in germany. Because they usually ruin it one way or the other.
The coverart of the japanese set might be discussable, but if it is the same neat slipcase/digipack setup as for 1.11,
then it will be superior to anything that Universum will publish as packaging. (Also note the collectors edition japanese
OST of Eva 2.0 came in a matching orange cardboard slipcase).
Okay there are no subtitles I know... but still I pre-ordered my japanese first pressing BD.
I'll prolly check out the Universum release too, but my doubts about them being capable to do a good release stay.
Just my two cents, cheers.
Where the heck is Hong Kong in all this? I'm really disappointed they haven't put out a BD of 1.11 and no news on even a DVD for 2.22.
Haha, good going Germany, I'm really glad for you.
