During an award ceremony for the Japanese Blu-ray Disc release of Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo, Walt Disney Home Entertainment made a very exciting announcement. As expected after the success of Ponyo on Blu-ray Disc, the studio announced to begin Blu-ray Disc releases of Studio Ghibli's classics (probably in Japan) in 2010! Specific titles haven't been mentioned, but based on some comments from Toshio Suzuki during his radio show, The Ghibli Blog assumes that My Neighbors The Yamadas (ホーホケキョとなりの山田くん) will be the second Blu-ray Disc from the studio.

Since there have been no announcements for major restoration off all titles in the Ghibli catalog, i must therefore believe these will be horrible upscales of old standard def master tapes. All the Movies that came out before howl's moving castle have to be retransfered from their original film elements we are talking probably millions of dollars would have to be spent. Disney as a huge company has the money, i doubt a small studio like ghibli has that kind of money.
Any animation done on a computer will have to be upscaled anyway or redone or re-rendered. Unless it is already in HD. 35mm Film has a native resolvable resolution greater than 4 times or more that of 1080P. Anything less than a full scan at 4k the current standard would be a waste.
Very exciting. I shudder to even look at the prices, but hopefully US releases won't be too far behind/too badly messed up. Maybe the pending non-existence of Miramax will even lead to an eventual, long overdue US special edition for PRINCESS MONONOKE.
Typo in title! You miswrote Studio ;P
